Abe Gurvin (1937-2012) ☜ 

Here are some odds and ends I’ve collected by one of my favorite artists, Abe Gurvin. His collage-like illustrations incorporate whimsical line art, chunky woodcuts, playful typography, Victorian-era printer’s ornaments, and an unusually bold and saturated color palette. These disparate elements often overlap one another, creating a unique style that encapsulates the psychedelic 1960s and 70s while always retaining a bit of late 1950s modernism. Gurvin is best known for his numerous rock album covers including titles by Frank Zappa, Atomic Rooster, Bread, and Elektra’s Nuggets compilations. Since those pieces are easily found and well documented, I’ve decided to showcase some of his lesser-known work here.
